This microfiction piece describes an airport goodbye and the emotional tension that comes in the parting that happens before the departing.
Airports are magical places. My first time boarding an airplane (apart from being 2 years old) was when I was 16. I would be taking two planes on a high school Spanish trip en route to Santiago, Chile. One morning, it was a chilly March day in Wisconsin (USA) and the next, I was walking out into a paradise of palm trees in the Southern Hemisphere. Since then, I’ve flown to Ecuador, Argentina, Nicaragua, and Mexico.
I’ve never actually studied abroad, like the narrator of this piece, and I’m not the sort of person to look back. . . but here’s to imagining what it would be like if I did. . .
