If I asked you in the middle of July to describe to me half a dozen ornaments on your Christmas tree, you could probably exceed that number if your family is like mine. I know the story of nearly every ornament on our tree. Many of the ornaments are handmade or were given as gifts. Christmas ornaments often harken to either specific moments or hazy eras of our lives. They recall the love of both friends and family.
“The Green Glass Angel” is an ode to the memories held–sometimes in fragile condition–by ornaments.
For me, this fictional story is wrapped up in warm memories of my mom and grandma. When my grandmother died last year, I realized that I may now never learn what I didn’t ask her and I may never get a refresher on the details of the stories she did tell me. But I do have my own memories of her that I can recount to my children and they can impart to theirs. And thankfully, I have a mom who can help piece things together about Grandma’s life and tell me her own stories. Before it’s too late.
